International Day of the Girl Child

In commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, the Good Shepherd South West India Province hosted a deeply inspiring and purpose-driven one-hour event that boldly challenged entrenched gender norms and envisioned a world where every girl can rise, lead, and thrive without limits. Guided by the powerful theme, “Breaking Gender Norms: Building Futures,” the program stood as a testament to the Province’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and empowerment. Students from various Good Shepherd institutions across the Province played a central role as moderators and advocates, steering insightful discussions on critical gender issues such as Dowry Harassment, Child Marriage and the Devadasi System, Internalisation of Stereotypes, and Breaking Barriers in the Workplace. Each dialogue illuminated the persistent challenges girls face and emphasized the transformative power of awareness, education, and collective action in dismantling discrimination. A poignant mime performance by the St. Martha’s Hospital troupe captured hearts as it depicted the journey of a young girl whose dreams were constrained by societal expectations. Through resilience and courage, she triumphed over every barrier — a powerful portrayal of the indomitable spirit of girls everywhere and a reminder that no force can silence determination. Adding further depth to the program, the Social Services Department of the South West India Province presented a moving video on the transformative impact of girls’ education. The message resonated deeply — that education is not just a right, but a catalyst for empowerment, equality, and lasting social change. The event drew enthusiastic participation from delegates and students across regions including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines, Central East India, Nepal, and beyond — a reflection of the global unity and shared commitment of the Good Shepherd network toward uplifting every girl. The celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child reaffirmed the Province’s dedication to advocacy, awareness, and action. It inspired all present to continue building a future where every girl can live with dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity — a future shaped by courage, compassion, and the collective will to break every barrier.
